Downloading email through Proxy+ with Outlook
When I recieved the usb modem for my broadband from talktalk (Carphone Warehouse) I immediately realised that I wouldn't just be able to stick it into my d-link ethernet router and make everything ok. I was going to have to work at this one to share the connection between three computers for both the internet and email using outlook.

Getting the internet to work wasn't too much of a pain. I got a spare (small) computer that I could use as a proxy, installed server 2003 on it (although you could use xp/2000) set it's network (not internet) IP to 192.168.0.100 and then downloaded Proxy+ (proxy plus). I installed Proxy+ and went into the settings via http://127.0.0.1:4400 in internet explorer. Choosing the proxies tab and then general I changed the proxy for HTTP Proxy from 4400 to 8080 to distinguish between admin and general use. I set my router to leave both static and dynamic IPs alone and I then went and gave the computers static IP addresses, changed their subnets and workgroups to all be the same (255.255.0.0 and WORKGROUP), plugged the proxy server address and port into their browser programs (192.168.0.100:8080) and the internet was up and running. Nice one I thought.
Opening up Outlook for the first time and seeing an error message for both sending and recieving email I browsed the internet for a while for a solution. After molding two or three fixes together I got it to work, and this is how:
On the proxy server in the Proxy+ settings you need to tick the box next to SOCKS, you then need to go to Proxies -> Mapped links and put in Type: pop3, proxy port 110 and then click Add (leave target host blank). Then enter type TCP, proxy port 25 and in your target host put mail.server.com:25 (where you have changed it to your smtp (sending) server).
You then need to go to Outlook and change both your sending and recieving server for your email account to the address of the proxy (in my case 192.168.0.100). You also need to change your user name from bob@example.com to bob@example.com#mail.server.com
If your out going email server requires authentication then in your email account options click on 'more settings -> outgoing server' and tick the box saying this, then tick 'log on using' and put in your normal sending username and password (you need this because your recieving email username now has a hash and a server attached to it!). Also be sure to tick 'remember password'.
Click ok and then click 'test account settings'. Hopefully all should be well and you should be recieving your email. If not then there is one other thing you can do. Where you went into Proxy+ and added pop3 110, you could go back and add each of your individual recieving mail servers one at a time. So type: pop3 proxy 110 and target host: mail.server.com:110.
I hope this enables you to set up your email quicker then I did. Let me know your comments, suggestions or corrections.
